Pneumatic trailer operations Vs Hydraulic ones: A comparison

In this current age of industrialization, people are very much keen on opting for modernized tools that can ease up their physical labor. Now when it comes to loading and unloading heavy dry goods for industrial or commercial use effective tools such as the pneumatic or hydraulic controls comes into picture. In a general sense, both of these alternatives use the same principle. To simplify things it can be said that a mechanical impulse is transmitted when a motor compresses a substance that is then carried through hoses to the tool itself, activating its moving parts. The prime advantage of hydraulic and pneumatic systems over a rigid transmission is that the pressure lines are flexible. Moreover, thanks to their shock-absorbing qualities, gas and liquids can improve the longevity of the systems that they're used in. Compared to this a rigid transmission can cause vibration, fatigue, wear and breakages. Now let’s look at the comparative studies between these two alternatives. 

Compression: 

The first difference between fluid and gas is that gas is highly compressible, while fluid is actually incompressible. Now, this has one major implication. Since most of the pneumatic compressors consist of a pump and an air tank; the tank contains compressed air which moves the tool. Now the compressor only turns on when air pressure drops below a certain minimum level. On the other hand, the pump on a hydraulic system must be running at all times when the tool is in use. As the fluid isn't compressible it has no way to store energy.

Exhaust: 

If you look closely at the mechanics, you can see that most pneumatic compressors have an open system which uses air from the surrounding atmosphere to power tools. However, in those places where the air has done its work, it escapes once more. In most applications, this doesn't matter; however, this means that pneumatic control is problematic to use in situations where either air is not available, or air exhaust is not desirable. In this respect, a hydraulic system must be closed by definition. This characteristic makes hydraulic tools very popular for use in underwater work, where air is unavailable and electric motors can short out.

Lubrication:

It’s obvious that moving parts need to be lubricated on repeated intervals to keep them from wearing out. Before being used to power a pneumatic tool, air is typically lubricated with aerosolized oil or other substance that will deposit inside the tool and ensure smooth operation. However, when it comes to hydraulic fluid, it acts as its own lubricant. 

Filtering: 

This same logic applies when it comes to filtering out impurities. If the mechanism is used in a dirty environment; an air compressor will catch a startling amount of dust and particles. On the other hand, a hydraulic system also has filters for the fluid; however, since it's a closed and pressurized system, impurities don't enter circulation from the outside environment unless the system has already failed. Hence, you need to understand that the impurities caught by a hydraulic filter must have an internal origin. It can come from either erosion of the moving parts, or corrosion of the system, which is an effect that you can minimize by using a fluid with anti-corrosion additives. 

Heat: 

Most gases, and certainly air, have a low heat capacity. This means that you can't count on air to cool your pneumatic system. Fluids have a much higher heat transfer rate, which means that your hydraulic fluid also helps with heat dissipation. This is a double-edged sword: on one hand, hydraulic tools are in much less need of special cooling. The downside is that, when hydraulic parts heat up excessively, the fluid may boil or create vapor pockets, potentially causing catastrophic failure. This, by the way, is the major reason large vehicles such as aircraft and tractor-trailers use pneumatic brakes instead of hydraulic ones like passenger cars do. The energy generated by braking a multi-ton vehicle is so great that brake failure caused by boiling brake fluid is an ever-present danger. 

Smoothness: 

As fluid is incompressible, it gives much finer and smoother control over motion. Whereas, hydraulics is far more precise than pneumatics, and are therefore used in servos where an air-powered motor wouldn't give the degree of control required. 

Pressure: 

Through tests, it has been seen that hydraulic tools operate at far higher pressures than pneumatics. Typically, the pneumatic tools operate at 90-125 psi, yet hydraulic systems, even portable ones, generate pressures in the thousands of lb per square inch. 

Centralization: 

There are a number of industrial facilities who have a large central air compressor with many outlets. This works very conveniently, because workers can plug in pneumatic tools as needed, use them, then detach and move them to another location. However, on the other hand a central hydraulic compressor is simply not feasible for the vast majority of facilities.

So, these are just some of the differences between using gas and fluid to power your tool.
